NEW CENTER TO TREAT VETERANS SUFFERING FROM TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AND PTSD

Treatment for traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress coming to Las Vegas could restore the lives of Veterans, athletes, police and firefighters and their families

More than 300,000 Veterans – nearly one in 5 serving since 9/11/2001 – suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Often referred to as the signature wounds of the war on terror, Veterans with these injuries suffer from unbearable headaches, dizziness, depression, nightmares, and violent mood swings and are a leading cause of high suicide rates among Veterans, currently 22 a day.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), widely used to treat a variety of injuries and diseases, has been shown to “permanently curtail TBI and PTSD symptoms, returning Veterans to a more normalized life” according to Dr. Paul Harch, perhaps the nation’s leading TBI and PTSD researcher and clinician. Dr. Harch published the first case of HBOT benefiting veterans with TBI and PTSD in 2009 and subsequently he and others published confirmatory evidence in 2012 in the prestigious peer-reviewed Journal of Neurotrauma (http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/neu.2011.1895).

Former Secretary of the Army Martin Hoffman was a strong supporter for HBOT for Veterans and encouraged the “Treat Now” coalition which advocates for HBOT for TBI and PTSD treatment for Veterans by the more than 1,000 HBOT facilities across the country which he termed a pivotal asset.

The effects of the TBI/PTSD epidemic will linger for years if not confronted. The good news is that hyperbaric oxygen treatment has been shown effective for treating TBI and PTSD dating back decades, Vietnam Veterans having been effectively treated and returned to normal function.

Las Vegas Veteran advocate Janet Franco, local business owner of the Pay it Forward Network, along with Steve Reimers, hyperbaric oxygen therapy expert, Navy Veteran and Chief Financial Officer of the International Hyperbaric Medical Fund and Barry Meuse, USAF combat Veteran, former fighter pilot and Veteran advocate, have combined to bring hyperbaric oxygen therapy to Las Vegas-area Veterans. Ms. Franco plans the first Las Vegas HBOT treatment center for Veterans, called the “Imagine N.O.W. (Nurturing Our Warriors) Hyperbaric Treatment Center of Las Vegas,” which will be supported by donations and insurance reimbursements to the extent they are available.

Two years ago, in recognition of the efficacy of HBOT for TBI and PTSD and in an effort to make it HBOT generally available to all soldiers and Veterans, the State of Oklahoma passed the first state-sponsored Veterans HBOT Treatment Bill (#1604). This law provides HBOT treatment for every soldier and Veteran who needs it. Several other states including Texas are in process of passing similar legislation to insure all serving active-duty and Veterans are afforded this ground-breaking care.

It is time this long-awaited care is available in Nevada. The Janet Franco Imagine N.O.W. Hyperbaric Treatment Center of Las Vegas will provide needed HBOT care to thousands of Las Vegas and Nevada Veterans who suffer daily from the devastating effects of TBI and PTSD. The Franco center will operate in cooperation with other Las Vegas and Nevada-based Veteran advocates such as the Blue Star Mothers, the Veteran Village of Las Vegas, the local chapter of the Disabled Veterans of America (DVA), the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and many others.

Franco plans to conduct HBOT treatment under a research protocol to advance the science and will include other supporting cognitive and physical therapies to raise cognitive skills as well as providing job-training opportunities to help Veterans treated at the Center to return to the work place as productive citizens of the community.
